HTC One Max possible specs and price info appears

There have been a number of leaks and rumours in the last few weeks suggesting that HTC are about to launch a phablet sized version of its popular HTC One smartphone, and ahead of any official announcement the HTC One Max specs and price seemingly appear.

The rumours and apparent leaks have been increasing recently with images of fingerprint scanners and other claims, and now it seems that someone at China Mobile has been a little bit trigger happy and pushed the publish button for a listing for the Chinese version of the HTC One Max.

It suggests that the device will be priced at around $800 with the Chinese version having the model number of HTC 8088, and also having dual SIM support and a microSD card port. The rest of the specs that should arrive elsewhere include a 5.9-inch Full HD display with a 1.7GHz processor, which is likely to be the quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 unit.

Other features are listed as 2GB of RAM along with 16GB of storage with a 3,300 mAh battery providing the juice, but the international version of the handset could have more internal storage due to the lack of microSD card support.

Camera wise the main rear unit is a 4MP UltraPixel shooter but it is not known if it will feature OIS like the HTC One does. Rumours so far have suggested that the HTC One Max will be launched sometime next month, but until we hear something more official we won’t know for sure.

HTC One Android 4.3 update to bring camera fix

It is not unusual for various smartphones to have issues that instead of being of a more worrying hardware problem are normally a bug with the software that is running on them. Now it has been revealed that the HTC One Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update is to bring a fix to the camera and the issues that have been affecting some users.

It seems that owners of the HTC One have been met with a problem when using the HTC One camera that causes images to be tinted blue, purple, or red when taking photos in low light conditions.

Now the company has stated that it is working on the problem that has been affecting some users of the HTC One, and a fix will be released with the Android 4.3 update when it arrives. The update is expected to arrive for US owners of the device first sometime this month, before being released to international users in the second phase of the rollout.

In the meantime the company are advising those that have been affected by the problem to reduce the ISO levels to make the problem less noticeable, or even return the handset to be given a replacement.

This will be embarrassing for the company as the 4MP UltraPixel rear camera is one of the biggest selling points for the handset, which has impressed many users and reviewers alike since the HTC One was released earlier in the year with many suggesting the device is the best Android unit available at present.

HTC One Max inspires Ultra imagining

The upcoming HTC One Max is generating a huge amount of interest at the moment. The phone may not have been officially introduced yet, but is said to be a phablet version of the massively popular HTC One smartphone. Now the HTC One Max has inspired an Ultra imagining.

The HTC One Max has been the subject of plenty of leaked news and looks set to have a 5.9-inch display and possibly a fingerprint scanner, unlike the One and One Mini. The HTC One Ultra that we’re showing here has a 5.8-inch display and like the HTC One has beautifully sleek styling.

It’s at this point though that we have to inform readers that the HTC One Ultra is a concept design, so it won’t hit the shelves unlike the HTC One Max. Nevertheless this is such an impressive concept that we thought many of our readers would be interested in seeing it.

It’s always good to take a look at concept renders from time to time as they can offer a taste of what to expect on future devices. This HTC One Ultra was designed by Hasan Kaymak and has some attractive touches such as the slightly curved body to sit nicely in the hand.

Kaymak has helpfully provided some specs for the HTC One Ultra that would have looked a little futuristic until recently. However the speed with which we’re seeing improved specs arriving for current smartphones means that they don’t look quite so overblown.

This HTC One Ultra has a 64-bit processor (as just appeared on the iPhone 5S), a 5.8-inch UltraHD display, 4K video capture, and runs HTC Sense 6.0 with Active Multitasking. It also has Beats Audio with in-ear headset, a changeable battery and microSD card slot.

As well as all this, what about ActiveOn technology that means the user doesn’t need to press the power button as a sensor recognizes their hand. This is one of the most notable concept designs we’ve seen lately, and we wonder how many readers would like to see this type of HTC handset come to fruition?

HTC Droid DNA Sense 5 Android 4.2 update detailed

There’s good news today if you own the Droid DNA smartphone. Verizon has now detailed the HTC Droid DNA Android 4.2 and Sense 5 update, so it looks as though the arrival might be just around the corner.

The software update will bring Android 4.2 Jelly Bean to the Droid DNA as well as the HTC Sense 5 user interface. Verizon hasn’t yet officially announced when the software update will release but the fact that Big Red has highlighted HTC Sense 5 for the Droid DNA on a support page is promising news.

The page gives an overview of the update with plenty of information about the many additions that Droid DNA owners will benefit from with HTC Sense 5, such as BlinkFeed to personalize your Home screen, a favorites tab for an easier way to find contacts and a new calendar.

There are also new Quick Settings including new toggles in the notification bar, smart dialer, a gallery app with video highlights and more. Usually once we see details of an update on Verizon’s website it’s not too much longer until the rollout of the update begins. So fingers crossed, we’ll be hearing more on that very soon.

HTC has previously said that the Droid DNA would receive Android 4.3 by late September and skip 4.2, so it’s possible that 4.3 will bring this Sense 5 update. Verizon doesn’t specify which on this support page.

HTC One Max fingerprint scanner spotted again

HTC started the year by releasing the hugely popular HTC One which has since spawned a mini version, but there has been a lot of anticipation for the release of the much rumoured HTC One Max which has been spotted again wearing what looks like a fingerprint scanner.

The image that you can see on this page is allegedly showing a working HTC One Max sitting next to the HTC One, but as we have seen before images can prove to be bogus. These latest images though do fit in with previous sightings that also include a fingerprint scanner fitted to the device.

These images have been put up on Chinese website Weibo and include one that shows the device seemingly working, but the image that shows the back of the device has a square cut out below the camera that could be the fingerprint scanner.

Rumours about the unannounced handset suggest we will see a device with a 5.9-inch Full HD display that is powered by the quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor running at a 2.3GHz clock speed and paired with 2GB of RAM.

Speculation also hints that the device will have the same 4MP UltraPixel rear facing camera that is found on the smaller HTC One, and there will be 32GB of on board storage while being powered by a 3,000 mAh battery pack.

There have also been claims that the HTC One Max will launch with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean coupled with a new HTC Sense 5.5 overlay, but until we hear anything official we will have to take any leaks or images with the usual pinch of salt.

HTC One Max branding is tiny

There has been a lot of conjecture about the HTC One Max, a larger phablet-sized version of the popular HTC One flagship. This is going to be a mighty phone with the display rumored to be 5.9-inches. Therefore it seems ironic that the HTC One Max branding is tiny.

Not too long ago we showed a leaked image that purported to show the HTC One Max alongside the HTC One and HTC One Mini. The image depicted what could be a fingerprint sensor on the rear of the device, something the other two in the family don’t have.

Just a few days ago we also heard a leak that the HTC One Max will be available on Sprint, and AT&T was also previously rumored to be a carrier for the device. Now the same very reliable source of that leak has tweeted a leaked image of the branding for the HTC One Max.

The leaked image courtesy of Evleaks and shown below shows the words “HTC One” in uniform size followed by the word “max” in very much smaller print. This seems pretty funny considering, as we might well have imagined the “Max” would instead be in much larger text. Instead it appears to follow the branding pattern of the One Mini where “Mini” was also in much smaller letters.

This is only a snippet of news about the HTC One Max, but we thought we’d share it with readers as we found it rather odd. The Max branding might be small but the phone itself looks likely to impress, with rumors of a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 5.9-inch Full HD Super LCD3 display, and UltraPixel camera.

HTC One gold color prospect leaked

The HTC One is an extremely popular flagship device and as seems to be happening more often lately, HTC has added more color varieties since its release. Now there’s the prospect of an HTC One in a gold color option being launched, following a recent spot.

When the HTC One first appeared on the scene it was available in just black or silver. A red color was added some time later, and very recently we saw a metallic blue option made official (colors may vary by carriers).

The possibility of a gold HTC One has now been raised by some leaked images that purport to show the display and front casing of the device. We’re showing you a couple of the images here, and as you can see, they definitely appear to show a champagne gold version, but this could be something achieved with clever lighting.

It’s always difficult to know if these kind of leaked images are the real deal or not, and we have to remember this is not a finished HTC One. However, it does look plausible and after the red and blue HTC One’s have emerged it could be the case that HTC is extending the range further.

HTC One Max looks set for Sprint

The HTC One Max is generating plenty of interest even though it has not been officially introduced yet. We’ve seen many rumors on the phone already, and it has been described as a phablet version of the flagship HTC One. Now it looks as though the HTC One Max is set to arrive on Sprint.

We’ve previously seen a pretty convincing leaked image of the HTC One Max, and hopefully it won’t be too much longer until we see the phone make its debut. Many of you will have heard of Evleaks, an often-reliable source of leaked device information and they posted an interesting tweet yesterday.

The tweet not only seems to confirm that this upcoming HTC One Phablet (originally codenamed T6) will indeed by titled the HTC One Max, but also says the phone will be available on Sprint.

A previous tweet from Evleaks mentioned that the HTC One Max was heading to AT&T, so we’re not altogether sure if this means that both of these major carriers will carry the phone, or if AT&T is now out of the picture.

So far rumored specs for the One Max include a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, a 5.9-inch Super LCD3 display with Full HD resolution and 342 ppi, and 2GB of RAM.

Other rumored inclusions are an UltraPixel rear camera, a 2.1-megapixel front-facing shooter, good-sized 3200 mAh battery, and a fingerprint scanner as in the just-announced iPhone 5S. Another recent leak suggested that the HTC One Max might have expandable storage via microSD, unlike the HTC One and HTC One Mini.

HTC One tablet spotted, not HTC One Max

An image of an HTC tablet has leaked online, revealing a slate that bears the same aluminium design as the HTC One flagship.

It seems that HTC is milking the critically acclaimed HTC One design for all its worth, seeing as it is using it for all its devices at the moment. The Taiwanese manufacturer has already released the HTC One mini with the same design, and a supersized HTC One Max is also reportedly on the cards.

Now, a HTC tablet with the same metallic design has popped up proudly brandishing the forward facing speakers of its smartphone sibling.

With a screen size somewhere between the 8 – 10-inches range, the HTC slate does look like someone has stretched out the HTC One for comic effect. However, seeing as the company hasn’t announced any tablet plans as yet, it may well be a fake.

If the HTC One tablet is real though, there’s very little official or unofficial details surrounding it.



HTC One Max Rumours

The HTC One Max rumours on the other hand have been doing the round online for quite some time now.

It’s suggested that the enlarged HTC One will have a 5.9-inch Full HD display powered by a 3,200mAh battery.

Potentially a direct rival to the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the HTC One Max is tipped to have a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM.

It will undoubtedly have the new features introduced with the latest HTC Sense UI like BlinkFeed and Zoe.

A launch is expected sometime this month at an event which could see the HTC One tablet emerge alongside it.

What with the Apple event later today and IFA 2013 not yet a distant memory, it’s certainly a busy month for tech.

HTC One

Stunning design and hardware are only half the battle in designing a flagship device that is destined to hold its own for a respectable amount of time in an ever changing environment.

One of the biggest challenges is in how you interact with the phone. Sense 5 is an admirable change to what has gone before and the overall look and feel is more refined, if a little conservative. You’ll either love or loathe the stark modern skin and look.

Where HTC has to pay attention, is in providing timely updates to the HTC One, and having started 1 version behind (albeit not too dramatic in difference), signs are already showing of over promising and underdelivering as the 4.2.2 update is still to arrive.

It would be such a shame to invest in such a premium piece of kit to be left high and dry with an extended wait for the latest and greatest to maximise the true functionality of all that is Android.

This is sadly the chink in the Google Android armour, where manufacturers of handsets end up with an array of items all running different versions of Android with very little consistency and reliability with updates. This is made worse when manufacturers choose to skin over the top and have to spend time with each update to upgrade their own software.

What disappoints me with companies such as HTC and Samsung is the way they remain tight lipped and either refuse to listen to their consumers or interact with them in an informative way to retain good customer loyalty.

New HTC One, One Mini updates rolling out

We always try to keep readers informed about the latest updates for their smartphones and tablets. Today’s update news concerns the HTC One and HTC One Mini. Minor updates are now seeding and owners of these devices should get notifications soon.

The firmware update for the HTC One comes in at 31.66MB and is available as an OTA (over-the-air) update. This update includes support for Mini+ and also offers Google keyboard. The software update is version 2.24.401.8.

Meanwhile the software update for the HTC One Mini is 1.31.401.1 and 23.32MB in size. It brings stability improvements for car mode and the camera, as well as fixing a Google Play movies playback issue. This update also brings Google keyboard to the HTC One Mini.

If you haven’t yet received notification of the applicable update for your HTC One or One Mini, you should be receiving it soon. In the meantime you can always check manually to see if it is available.

For both updates you’ll need to download using your cellular data connection. Download speeds will vary and charges will apply. HTC also states that the update won’t delete any of your existing content.

HTC Announces the Desire 601 and 300 Midranges Smartphones

Not unlike their fierce rival at Samsung, the slow circuitous return to greatness for HTC is paved with not just “One” stellar Android offering–but several. Similar to the competition, HTC is hitting mobile consumers of all types. The HTC One we reviewed a few months is chiefly the flagship and high end solution from the company. Christen recently undressed the HTC One mini with a hands-on 1st impressions piece. Still the company is far from sitting idle.

Today HTC has announced two brand new midrange Smartphones as well as a new “Vivid Blue” color variant for the award winning HTC One. The new include the HTC Desire 601 and the HTC Desire 300. The ever-prolific Qualcomm has managed to slap their tech in a couple more devices. The HTC 601 will rock a Snapdragon 400 1.4Ghz processor. While the 300 will sport a Snapdragon S4 at 1Ghz.

If you’re wondering which is the higher end of these lower tiered devices, the answer is the HTC 300. That Snapdragon S4 processor is a tell-tale sign. It’s competent but still rather long in the tooth by today’s standards. The display size (4.3) is one of smaller offerings on current gen smartphones. You’ll note the battery is smaller and undoubtedly features reduced stamina than that found on the 601. It also has half the memory and half the HDD storage space. Although both the HTC 601 and the 300 offering microSD expansion up to 64GB.

Finally HTC rounds out today’s news with a promised October 2013 launch of the HTC One “Vivid Blue” color variant. I was awed by the elegant One all doled out in the striking red dress. Now she’s got a new evening gown to add to your eye-catching unibody wardrode. It’s doubtful the new blue will bring any spec changes. However the new diminished subwoofer, dubbed the BoomBass subwoofer speaker is sure to take advantage of the BoomSound front-facing speakers. Despite the canorous performance of BoomSound it fails to produce impressive low tones. This is supposedly the job of the new BoomBass subwoofer accessory for HTC BoomSound enabled phones.

The first of the videos shows us the Apple iPhone 5 against the Samsung Galaxy S4. The video runs over 40 minutes and it has enjoyed more than 175 likes on YouTube and just 19 dislikes as it is a fill side by side comparison.

The second of the comparison videos goes on for around 30 minutes, but it hasn’t been seen by as many people. The video was made by Chris Voss, he has a show on YouTube. The video review is in-depth and it takes a look at the specs and features of Android and iOS.

The longest video is the one putting the HTC One up against the Samsung Galaxy S4 and this runs for past hour. So the reviewer has plenty of time to look into all the aspects, it is great to be able to get a different perspective. This is one of the reasons why there is a second video making a comparison between the handsets.

The last of the videos is our favourite as it comes with many features, one of these is that those watching can skip to the part of the video that they are interested in. The second one shows time codes to get to the areas easily. The video runs for around one hour.

HTC Desire 601 hands

Since unveiling its flagship One smartphone HTC’s been oddly quiet about its plans for the lower end Desire range, leaving Samsung, BlackBerry and Lumia to fight over the low cost small to medium-sized business space.

However, a few months on, following the arrival of Nokia’s affordable 4G-enabled big screen Lumia 625 HTC’s chosen to retarget the market, unveiling its new Desire 601 smartphone. The Desire 601 attempts to pull the exact same trick as the Lumia 625, offering users on a budget 4G connectivity and a big screen smartphone experience.

However, with the imminent arrival of Apple’s rumoured “affordable” iPhone and the sea of affordable Samsung Galaxy handsets currently spamming the market, one has to question if 4G connectivity will be enough to win over hard-nosed business buyers.

Design and build

Visually the HTC Desire 601 is very different to the firm’s recent One series of devices. The Desire 601 features a slightly rubberised polycarbonate chassis and detachable backplate that when removed grants access to its 2100mAh removable battery and microSD card slot.

This means the Desire 601 feels a little like a cross between a traditional HTC handset and Samsung Galaxy phones – in fact were it not for the HTC logo and dual speakers lining its bottom and top it would be all but impossible to tell who made the phone.

During our hands on we noticed the use of polycarbonate, not metal made the Desire 601 feel lower end than HTC’s stellar One handsets. However, being fair to HTC the Desire 601 does feel significantly more robust than most other affordable smartphones. The Desire 601 also remained very comfortable in hand thanks to its chassis’ slightly rubberised and reasonable 135x67x 9.88mm size and 130g weight.

Display

The Desire 601 features a 4.5in 960×540 qHD display. This means the Desire 601 is on paper nowhere near as crisp as a full HD 1920×1080 screen but better than a bottom-barrel VGA or WVGA display.

Testing the display we were reasonably impressed with the phone’s display. Using it in the fairly complementary conditions of the demo showroom, text on the display proved legible. While icons weren’t as crisp as mid-tier Android smartphones, colour and brightness levels were impressive. Running it head to head with the Nokia Lumia 625 we had in our pocket, we found the Desire’s display was much crisper than the Nokia phone’s 4.7in 480×800 IPS LCD screen.

We didn’t get a chance to test the Desire 601 outside of the event room, meaning we couldn’t check how it performed in more adverse lighting conditions, like bright sunlight.

Operating system and software

The Desire 601 we tried was running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean overlaid with HTC’s custom Sense 5.0 user interface.

The lack of the latest 4.3 Jelly Bean Android version is slightly disappointing as the update adds a couple of nifty business-focused features to the OS. Chief among these is Restricted Access. Restricted Access is a feature debuted on 4.3 that builds on the multiple account support added on Android 4.2.2. The feature lets the owner of any Android device control what rights each account on the phone has, so they can quickly set up the device for work purposes, blocking the user from doing silly things like downloading dodgy apps from third-party marketplaces.

The addition of Sense 5.0 is also likely a controversial point for some business buyers. While we’re fans of many of the features of HTC’s latest Sense version, the addition of a custom skin will delay how quickly buyers will be able to get software updates from Google. This is because HTC has to test and adapt its Sense code to work with the latest Android software. In the past, the cost and difficulty of doing this has meant smartphone makers have seriously dragged their feet rolling out Android updates for cheaper smartphones.

That said, Sense does have some benefits, chief of which is Blinkfeed. Blinkfeed is a custom screen that replaces Android’s native homescreen. The feed collates information from over 1,500 approved news outlets, including the BBC, Sky News and ITV as well as the user’s Facebook, Twitter and email into one push update tile display. While some users have complained about the feed, HTC’s made it so you can reset the native Android homescreen and in general we’ve found Blinkfeed to be a positive addition. In our experience the custom home screen makes it easy to quickly check the latest headlines from your favourite news outlets without having to enter the Chrome web browser.

Performance

The Desire 601 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400, dual-core 1.4GHz processor and boasts 1GB of RAM. During our hands-on we didn’t get a chance to properly benchmark the Desire 601 or see how it performed when tasked to play demanding applications like 3D games. However, during our time we didn’t notice any serious performance issues, with the 601 opening applications in less than 10 seconds and running them hassle free. Come our full review, we’ll make sure to more thoroughly test the Desire 601′s performance.

Camera

HTC’s custom Ultrapixel technology is sadly not included on the Desire 601, with it instead featuring a basic 5MP rear and VGA front-facing camera. We only got to test the 601′s camera in the event showroom, but found in these optimal conditions the phone was able to take passable photos. However, given the lack of Ultrapixel tech, we’re certain image quality will deteriorate quickly when shooting in more difficult conditions, like low or bright light.

Chances

While the HTC Desire 601 doesn’t feature all the cutting-edge technologies seen on HTC’s premier One portfolio, it does retain enough of them to remain interesting. This combined with its LTE connectivity could help it become a surprise hit with small businesses. Though a key factor deciding whether this will happen is the Desire 601′s price, an area HTC’s being woefully quiet about.

The HTC Desire 601 is due to launch in the UK in September.

Thorough HTC One vs. Motorola Droid Ultra review

Let’s say that you are with Verizon and you are looking to get yourself a new handset, then your troubles have only just begun. We say this because the carrier now has some great new phones in their line-up, but we thought we would take a closer look at two of the latest to come to Big Red to see just what they have to offer.

Today we thought you would like to see the dogfight between the HTC One and the Motorola Droid Ultra, to see which comes out as top dog? We already know the Ultra represents one of a trio of devices from the range, whereas the HTC One has been a long time coming on Verizon.

You’ll notice that we have included two videos, both could have been done as one but the reviewer thought it was a good idea to do it in two parts.

The HTC One specs are rather impressive with a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 4.7-inch 1080p display, 4-utlrapixel camera to the rear, non-removable battery, 32GB of internal storage and no SD card slot.

Motorola’s Droid Ultra is a little different in way of its UI and looks, but when it comes to specs it is very similar. It has the same speed processor, but of a different variety, it has a little bit bigger 5-inch display, but only 720p, and to the rear is a 10-megapixel camera.

It is not always about specs though because the UI, build quality and the overall experience is also of great importance. However, some people may want to hold out for the Ultra Max because it offers just that little bit more, but then again so will the HTC One Max, but that is a completely new battle.

The second video carries on from where the first one left off, although it does look at some of the other key HTC One and Motorola Droid Ultra features. You will notice both devices are running very different versions of Android because their UI has very different experiences.

We can’t help notice the Motorola has more useful features and is also faster in real-world tests, and so seems to be what the Moto X could have been in terms of speed. Having said that, the Moto X does have a much cleaner version of Android running.
