Sony’s Xperia range of phones are beautifully crafted, which is very well demonstrated with the company’s latest release, the Xperia Z (read El33tonline’s review over here) but this road was first paved by its older sister the Xperia V which was released in August 2012. I got my hands on a little black number and quickly set to the task of challenging its limits.
Right out of the box the Xperia V impresses with the contents that Sony has included in the package. Unlike other manufactures that only give you a two-prong power adapter and a USB charger cable, Sony has gone and thrown in a dock for your phone as well as a car charger and a few Near Field Communication tags to take advantage of the NFC technology in the Xperia V.
When it came to hands-on time, the Xperia V has a 4.3” display and a snappy dual core processor that can cope with all the modern games being released today. I had hours of exciting gameplay with it, and it didn’t matter if I was candy crushing it through level after level of a match-3 game, or munching on fish and unsuspecting bathers in Hungry Shark, the phone performed without glitch or lag.
The battery life kept it going for a full day of activity, too, and according to me that is excellent especially with all that we demand of our little devices in this modern world. Like the Xperia Z, it also comes with ‘Stamina Mode’ which helps stretch your battery life in those desperate times when a power source isn’t anywhere in sight.
The Xperia V runs Android v4.0.4 with an update to v4.1.2. The dual core with a gig of RAM at its command keeps everything humming along blissfully and navigation is fuss free with Sony’s unique small apps that add another dimension to multi-tasking. Android is fantastic as a mobile platform and the open nature of it allows for integration of applications from different developers and thus allows users to get to use our devices to their full potential.
13 Megapixel quality imagery is what you will get when you point the Xperia V at a must capture moment. The pictures taken with the phone are sharp with no shutter lag so that the action can be quickly captured without losing that perfect smile from your child, or a quick video of your mate trying to re-enact the latest scene from Jackass, which can then be swiftly uploaded to YouTube with hopes of going viral. The camera comes with all of the functionality expected of a mobile device.
Water and dirt is also a threat of the past to the Xperia V which has a rating of IP 57, which means as long as the flaps and the back cover are securely in place you are good to have a chat in the shower and able to rinse off the dirt from your last rodeo in the wild. This phone is tough and it accomplishes this while not looking out of place on the red carpet.
At the end of the day, a phone has to fit into your lifestyle. Are you on move and want the peace of mind that you will still have a fully functional phone if your device had to take a quick swim or Jonty Rhodes dive out the window, then the Xperia V is waiting for you at your nearest outlet. The Xperia range of phones are excellent and you will be rewarded when you make your decision to join the family. At R4000 the Xperia V is one of the very best in its class.
