Nikon was slow to get with the times in cameras: Remember when Canon made HD video standard on its DSLRs and Nikon wouldn't mention it? Yeah, those days are over, to say the least. The Nikon 1 V3 is somewhat ridiculous in how packed with features it is.
Shoot!
First and foremost, it's a killer action cam. Nikon has configured the 1 V3 with a new processor and some new designs that allow it to shoot stills at 20fps continuously. That's fairly impressive for a $1200 camera in the first place, and it's one of the fastest shooting rates for an interchangeable lens camera, period. Lest you worry about bad shots, Nikon claims its auto-focus system is the fastest and best in its class.
Film!
It's also got some pretty impressive video features. Yes, we know, we know, digital cameras are supposed to primarily shoot stills. But this is some fairly impressive stuff; at up to 120 frames per second in 720p, it's probably the fastest shooting at the highest resolution that we've run across on a prosumer camera. It also shoots 1080p video at up to sixty frames per second, making it easier to shoot video fluidly and get a little more detail into your shots. Considering that the photo mode itself is nearly 24 frames per second on its own, that's not a surprise, but it is nice to see that Nikon is working hard to put the Nikon 1 in the big leagues in that respect.
Pack!
Also, it's tiny, for such a powerful camera: It's the size of a decent point-and-shoot, and can, of course, accept Nikon lenses. All this and its far less than most DSLRs: The 1 V3 will come with a kit lens, an electronic viewfinder, and the body for $1200. That's a pretty good price for something this hard-working; it's out later this year.
