Tesla knew their Model S sedan was a revolutionary type of vehicle, but it still had some flaws. The company has just released news on its new D version, which improves the Model S in a number of signifiant ways. The new Tesla model promises fastest acceleration and better performance all packed into a classic Tesla design many have come to love and admire.
New Dual-Motor, All-Wheel-Drive 'D'
The new 'D' is powered by an entirely new system that places a motor not only in the front, but at the back, too. The Model S lacked all-wheel drive, which was a huge shortcoming of the sedan when it rolled off the production line in 2012. So this time around, they added a common trait that other top performance cars have. This improves the performance of the vehicle in different types of weather conditions, especially in regions that experience harsh winters. The mew additions will affect the car's range and handling, with the new configuration extending its range by an extra 10 miles per charge and allot it to go from 0-60 mph in just 3.2 seconds (on the performance model).
Three Configurations Available
This Decembers, buyers will receive the P85D model, which is supposed to be the top-of-the-line version for the Model D. The 60D and lower-end 85 D will start to hit dealerships February 2015. No official numbers on how much each model will cost, but know that it won't come cheap. Tesla admits that the base price for its P85D will be around $120k.
New Safety Features
The 'D' adds new safety features that help it do things on the road without the driver having to respond. It features sensors and cameras to help it look out for objects like other cars and road lines to increase safety. There's even a forward-looking radar, camera with image recognition and 360-degree sonar. Tesla will also be exploring new self-driving technologies in the future.
