So, the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII is out, and in addition to Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, and the dudes in suits, there's... a whole bunch of people you haven't heard of! So, here's what they've been in that you might have actually seen.
John Boyega
Boyega has largely been working in the UK, but he's best known over here for his lead role in Attack The Block, an '80s-esque SF film from Joe Cornish about aliens attacking an English housing project. It's a great film in its own right, and Boyega shows the charisma you want out of a Jedi.
We're guessing he's going to be our young Jedi. Boyega is very good at underplaying a role and letting the film speak for him, both good traits for a young Jedi.
Daisy Ridley
Ridley is actually largely an unknown, but if you want to see her in action, she plays Roxy in the eighth episode of the second season of Mr. Selfridge.
At a guess? She's a Disney princess, but it'd be neat to see her play the rogue in this particular movie. We're not sure what she's like as an actress, as she hasn't really gotten to flex her muscles on screen, but we'll be interested to see what happens.
Adam Driver
Yes, Adam from Girls. He's in this movie. Of course, we're assuming he'll be playing an entirely different character; Driver spent a lot of time on the guest star circuit, including the inevitable stint on a Law & Order episode.
Considering his often-shown ability to play off selfishness and sliminess, we're betting that if he's not a Sith, he's probably working with one.
Oscar Isaac
Probably the most interesting cast member out of the new team, Isaac is a rising star who's delivered a lot of great work, most notably as Llewyn Davis in Inside Llewyn Davis, but before that he was a surprising stand-out in Drive in a small role.
He's almost certainly either the hero or the main villain. For one thing, this is just a small part of his career trajectory: For another, it's fairly clear Disney swooped in to get him before someone else did.
Andy Serkis
Oh, come on, you know who Gollum is.
Domhnall Gleeson
AKA Bill Weasley. No, really, that's who Bill grew up into. Gleeson's an interesting choice; he's got a lot of experience in effects-heavy movies and has a fairly long resume compared to some of the new additions. Our guess is that he plays somebody important, but perhaps not an action role.
Max Von Sydow
Seen The Exorcist? Then you know Max Von Sydow. Most are speculating he's the villain, but truthfully, Sydow is at such an advanced age (he's 85!) that he's unlikely to take on a physically demanding role. He's likely key to the plot, though: You don't cast one of Bergman's favorite actors as a spear-carrier.
Any opinions on the cast? Any movies we missed? Let us know and we'll add them.
