See The Sabertron In Action (Video)

Recently, we told you about the new Kickstarter taking the nerd world by storm, Sabertron. But one thing we didn't have was a demonstration of the Sabertron in action. Fortunately, this injustice has been corrected.

Warriors Of The Foam

First of all, a quick recap for those too lazy to click links: Essentially, Sabertron adds a scoring system to all the foam noodles nerds whack each other with. If you've ever seen people running around with foam swords, well, they're really excited to finally have a scoring system to determine just how much damage they're handing out. However, it's more complicated to do that than you might at first think.

Yes, They Know What They're Doing

For example, especially when you get into the Society of Creative Anachronism side of things (translation: The guys who run around college campuses in chain mail yelling in Olde English), many of the people involved are actually using fencing and sword techniques from the time period. Granted, they're not using the actual, insanely heavy and sharp broadswords, because they're not psychopaths and don't want to hurt people, but still, they want their skills properly evaluated and rewarded. Nerds love quantification, after all.

So, the fact that you can both 'slash' and 'stab' your enemy is actually really exciting.

For More Than Just Nerds

That said, the sublime pleasures of chasing after your friends with foam objects should by no means be limited to Unix administrators. Anybody can buy a set of Sabertron toys and beat the everloving heck out of each other, including the small children who will inevitably be bought these toys by the crate as it expands to a wider audience. And we hope you'll consider it, if for no other reason than we don't want to be the only adults running around with glowing foam swords.
