Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One M8 (comparison)

Earlier this month, Motorola unveiled the new Moto X, a successor to their flagship device revealed last summer. Just like its predecessor, the new Moto X packs top-of-the-line specifications, with some exciting new features and customizations. The new Moto X comes with more customization options through Moto Maker with leather and wood back options to choose from. It's also launching in the UK in the coming weeks too. However, the question that remains is: how does it stack up against flagship devices from other OEMs such as the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One M8? If you have any confusion about the three, we're going to do a brief comparison to help you make the right decision.

Display

Moto X has a 5.2-inch AMOLED display, while the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5 features a 5-inch and 5.1-inch screen, respectively. All three handsets boasts a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels, that is, full HD, but with different pixel densities. Moto X offers a 423 ppi (pixel per inch) while the HTC One M8 and Galaxy S5 comes with 441 and 432 ppi pixel density, respectively. Both the Moto X (2014) and the hTC One M8 offer on-screen navigation keys while the Samsung Galaxy S5 has physical capacitive buttons for navigation purposes.

Design

This is where HTC One M8 excels from the remaining two in my opinion. However, both the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Moto X comes with an improved design as well. If you like customizing your handset, you may prefer Moto X as there are some exciting customization options available via Moto Maker, including leather, plastic and wood back covers. As for Samsung Galaxy S5, it comes with a different design than its predecessor, but it's still plastic with a dotted texture.

Camera

This is one of the first things several smartphone users see in a device - how good the camera is on a specific device. Motorola Moto X (2014) comes with a 13MP camera with autofocus, dual-LED flash and 4K video recording capabilities. Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with a 16MP shooter with a 1/2.6' sensor size and 1.12 µm pixel size, with image stabilization and 4K video recording. HTC One M8 may lag behind the duo in question, featuring a 4MP UltraPixel camera with Duo camera set up and it records videos at 1080p. One differentiating feature on the Moto X is the Quick Capture camera where you just have to rotate you hand, similar to opening a doorknob or a screwdriver, and it will start the camera even if the device is locked.

For the secondary cameras, Moto X and Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with a 2MP module, but HTC One M8 features a better, 5MP front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.

Specifications - Processor, Battery, etc.

Motorola Moto X measures 140.8 x 72.4 x 10 mm and weighs only 144 grams. Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm dimensions, and carries a similar weight as the Moto X - 145 grams. As for the HTC One M8, its heavier than the other two smartphones, weighing 160 grams and measures 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4 mm. It's worth noting that both THC One M8 and Galaxy S5 are thinner than the Moto X.

Under the hood, all three devices comes with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, but with different clock speeds - Samsung Galaxy S5 also has a Exynos 5 version for international markets. Both Samsung Galaxy S5 and Moto X are clocked at 2.5, while HTC One M8 is slightly lower at 2.3GHz. All three devices have 3GB of RAM on board.

Moto X comes with 16/32GB storage options, same as the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5. Unfortunately, there's no microSD card slot on the Moto X, while the other two rivals support up to 128GB of microSD card.

Moto X has a 2,300 mAh battery while the HTC One M8 and Galaxy S5 offers bigger batteries, 2,600 and 2,800 mAh, respectively. On the software side, all devices run Android 4.4 KitKat as their operating system.

Pricing

Moto X offers a similar set of specifications as the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8, but it costs a little less. If you're thinking about purchasing the device outright/off-contract, Moto X (2014) is going to set you back by $499 while the on-contract price is $99 with a two-year contract. As for Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 comes with a $199.99 price on-contract on major retailers in the US. The outright price of the two varies from carrier to carrier but you can expect around $650 on most of them. You can get it on a discounted price from retailers as well or during promotions.
