Playing sports is healthy for kids, but sometimes it can be dangerous. Contact sports like football are especially dangerous because of the high risk of concussions, which aren't always immediately detected. The new Kickstarter campaign for Jolt wants to make any sport a lot safer for today's youth. There's inadequate sideline technology and medical personnel to identify and evaluate potentially dangerous head impacts as soon as they happen and the Jolt sensor will change all that. The small wearable clip can be attached to any piece of head-worn gear, like a helmet, headband, goggles or headgear and will be able to analyze if a head impact is indeed a concussion.
The sensor is enclosed in soft silicone rubber and is fully waterproof and can endure dirt, dust, sand, rain and, of course, sweat. Its battery can last for weeks and the device is can be recharged via a standard micro USB port. If the head impact is strong enough, the sensor will vibrate to alert the person wearing it. And since it's wirelessly connected to parents' and coaches' smartphones (using Bluetooth Low Energy and available for iOS and Android), they'll be alerted at the sidelines even if they're over a hundred yards away. The app will let them know that the athlete should be evaluated and tested using its built-in cognitive test and concussion symptom checklist. You can get your own Jolt Sensor for your kids for $100 or $275 for a family pack of three sensors.
