Quantum Break has been a question mark for much of the time we've known about it. It's a video game from the team that gave us Max Payne... but there's also a TV series... and the two are somehow connected? It's all weird. What isn't weird is the game itself, which looks to play pretty well in new footage.
Max Time Freezing Pain
The basic gameplay is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from the back-of-the-envelope plot summary. You run around, shoot dudes, freeze time to sneak up on and shoot dude, use time control powers to lock dudes into place so you can shoot them. The usual.
Honestly, the standard gameplay seems a little conventional; it's Max Payne, but with a twist on the usual slow-motion gameplay of that series. At least until you get to the boss fight.
Back In Time
The boss fight, between you and two foes who can move around after you freeze time, is interesting; instead of freeze, headshot, freeze, headshot, you have to individually freeze them, run around behind cover, and only then shoot them. But even this is just a distraction for your ultimate plan, which is to knock a car into them at ridiculous speed using what they've already done. It's a clever bit of environmental manipulation, and honestly, a nice twist on what we've seen before.
Quantum Of Solace?
Honestly, we're torn. The basic gameplay looks fairly standard; even the 'time-freezing' elements aren't really as innovative as we'd like to see. That said, it does look like you have to use them in clever ways as time goes on, and we do like the concept, if nothing else. So, for now, we'll be keeping an eye on this Xbox One exclusive to see what other time-freezing tricks it might have up its sleeve.
